Members of the City Beautification Committee, Shavano Park Women, and Scout Troop 650, supported by a $500 grant from the Native Plant Society of Texas, planted a new community pollinator garden in the triangle next to EMS headquarters on NW Military Highway on March 28.

Led by aspiring Eagle Scout and Shavano Park resident Garrett Miller, 12 students, including 10 from the Troop, earned conservation service hours for their efforts on Saturday morning.

With guidance from City Beautification Committee member Matt Wealty and his loyal dog Arenita, along with four other adult volunteers, the garden was planted within six hours.

In preparation for the pollinator garden, the city had previously replaced the irrigation system, tilled the plot, and donated compost, soil, and stone.

Filled with yucca, mountain laurels, lantana and salvia, the garden will serve as both an example of how best to use drought tolerant native pollinator plants and a place of repose for bikers and joggers seeking the latest point of beautification on our renovated NW Military pathway.
